Critical Thinking and Media Literacy – Youth Exchange in the City of Požarevac, Serbia

“The international exchange in the city of Požarevac took place from February 25 to April 2. During this period, participants gained many new experiences, knowledge, and skills that will have a significant impact on our personal and social development. The exchange provided a unique opportunity to explore different cultures, build new friendships, and develop communication skills, especially in English, which was used throughout the entire program.”

Participants from several countries took part in the exchange, including Spain, Portugal, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia, Serbia, and Slovenia. This diversity enabled a rich cultural exchange, as we encountered different customs, traditions, and perspectives on a daily basis. Particularly memorable were the intercultural evenings, during which each country presented its culture, traditional dances, and typical food. These evenings were not only educational, but also very enjoyable and brought us closer together.

The exchange programme was very diverse. It included a wide range of activities, from various games and so-called ‘energisers’ at the beginning of the day to more serious project tasks. We collaborated on group projects focused on critical thinking, where we learned how to argue effectively, listen to different perspectives, and engage in constructive discussions. We later presented our ideas to the other participants, which further strengthened our public speaking skills and confidence.

Excursions were also an important part of the exchange. Among other things, we visited the Viminacium archaeological park, where we explored the museum and original underground tombs. In addition, we visited the municipal building in Požarevac,
where we learned more about the functioning of local government and the importance of municipal institutions. We were accommodated at Hotel Feniks, which provided us with good living conditions. A special aspect of the accommodation was that participants were placed in rooms with peers from different countries, which further encouraged intercultural connection and communication. In our free time, we socialised, shared experiences, and deepened new friendships.

The entire exchange was a very valuable experience. In addition to gaining new knowledge and skills, we also developed a broader perspective on the world, improved our English language skills, and created many unforgettable memories. Such exchanges are extremely important, as they enable young people to grow personally, become more open-minded, and develop a deeper understanding of different cultures.

In conclusion, we can say that the exchange in Požarevac was extremely successful and educational. All participants returned home enriched with new knowledge, experiences, and friendships that will stay with us for a long time.''
